In the book we view the War of the Roses from inside the mind of Margaret Beaufort, and that is NOT a comfortable place to be! She is portrayed as convinced of her own superiority and rigidly focused on the ascent of her son Henry to the kingship of England. She justifies her every action – including complicity in murder -as “the will of God.” She evolves as a bitter and rigid woman who spirals down into acerbic self-satisfaction.I give the book three stars because, though it does get across the dark and twisted psychological makeup of the main character, the repeated proclamations of Margaret as to her superiority and her resentment and hate for those who live happier and more rewarding lives than her own become tedious and expected.
