Herrmann, PhD, MFTAuthor of “William Everson: The Shaman’s Call”I believe that this is the most important Volume of verse written in American poetry since the publication of “Leaves of Grass.” As I see it, there are three central poems in this third Volume that speaks to the transformation of William Everson’s spiritual identity from a religious poet of the Dominican Order (see Vol. 2, “The Veritable Years”) to his life as teacher and poet-shaman in his course “Birth of a Poet” on the UC Santa Cruz campus. These three poems are “Black Hills,” “The Scout,” and “Stone Face Falls.” Each of these three poems has to do with Everson’s initiation into what Jungian analyst Joseph L.
