All too seldom, in reading about film, I have the experience of picking up a book that proves to be a revelation. Super Bitches and Action Babes: The Female Hero in Popular Cinema, 1970-2007 is precisely that-a groundbreaking work that not only sheds new light on a trend in films but also provides a fresh theoretical framework in which to situate its argument. Typical previous examinations of women in action roles had seen them as masquerading in male guise in a manner that ultimately is subsumed within white patriarchy. Only female stars of 1910s serials had been generally regarded as succeeding in transgressing male dominance, largely the result of a formative era in film where the audience was large female. However, in Super Bitches and Action Babes, author Rikke Schubart peels away old standbys, especially Laura Mulvey’s essay on woman as created by the object of the male gaze in cinema. Instead, Schubart outlines a far more convincing case, which she describes as
I’ll give you a little background that may be helpful. He’ll be 6 in a few months. He’s very intelligent. He is very well behaved for a child. He argues with me on just about everything. For example, if he asks a question and I he thinks the answer should be something different he gets angry and cries. Earlier he wanted popcorn for snack so I made him a small bag and he argued when I told him to open the microwave because it hadn’t beeped yet, but the popcorn was done popping and we all know how fast it burns etc. What really concerned me is his lack of acting quickly. What happens if it was something really important? Like get away from the stove! (because it’s hot) So he argued with me because it didn’t look hot, or something like that, and there’s no Action Pop Popcorn time in this situation for an explanation. (I try to stay away from no, don’t, can’t, shouldn’t, anything negative. I want to tell him what I want him to do, to avoid confusion, like with the popcorn I said, “Open the door.” I wasn’t mean just telling him what I wanted.)It just seems like everything gets turned into this argument thing with him. I know it’s an age thing. I’m just wondering how some of you have gotten through it. It’s very frustrating, and like I said earlier, some things there is just not time for an explanation for, it requires quick action before it’s too late and hands get burned or worse. BTW, I know some people are going to be rude so I’m asking for anyone with any negative replies to please move on. This is a learning experience for me and I am just looking for advice to help me and my child grow. Hearing someone complain about such things as, “why aren’t you watching him near a hot stove” should be eliminated because it was just an example. I alway keep a good eye on my child, I’m just concerned if there is a need to act quick moment, because honestly we all have them, no one is perfect, and it will come up. I’m just being proactive for when the situation may or may not arrive.TO ENDER: THANKS FOR NOT READING THE ENTIRE QUESTION AND MAKING AN UNIFORMED ANWER. GOOD FOR YOU!I do punish him, he got no popcorn.
