Reading Snack Machine is like seeing the aftermath of a particularly bad car crash on the side of the road — you are thoroughly disgusted, but you can’t take your eyes off of it. Wisner firmly establishes his own personal style with this blend of biotech-noir and good old fashioned story telling. Somehow he continually manages to make rather dark characters not only accesable, but likeable, and similarly, manages to make truly distubring ideas and imagery fascinating and even, at times, comic. The poetry is light fare (kind of like, um… snacks), but still enteraining. However many of the longer stories surpass their titular potential as mere morsels and deliver at a higher level. One example of this is the particularly good “Nix Demographic” which incorporates many of the ingredients of the previous stories (darkness, revulsion, hope, suspense, and future noir), but serves them up in a tighter package — one that manages to engage you emotionally as well as vicerally. I’m so pissed Snacks Machine the snack i wanted got stuck, i tried to put more money in to get it out but it wouldn’t let me cause the slot was blocked. argh stole my money :(
