In 1997, physicians were happily writing millions of prescriptions for Wyeth Pharmaceutical’s Premarin®. A prophet crying in the wilderness, Dr. Wright wrote the definitive book on bio-identical hormone replacement, Natural Hormone Replacement for Women Over 45. In 2002 the large research study, The Women’s Health Initiative, terminated the study because it found that Prempro® (Wyeth’s estrogen made from pregnant mare urine and progesterone created in the lab) increased the incidence of breast cancer increase 26% and instead of reducing heart disease as previously believed, increased the incidence of heart disease. Further, it increased the incidence of dementia. Premarin® and Prempro® prescriptions plummeted. Despite fierce opposition by the pharmaceutical industry, bio-identical hormone replacement has been increasing in popularity.
