This is a very intriguing and thought provoking book. Who are these characters? They are Moses. Esther, Paul, Peter, Job, the rich young ruler, Lazarus – to name a few. They are you and me. They were not a list of “Who’s Who in Purity and Sainthood.” Their live were marked by scandal and intrigue. These are people of the Bible – famous biblical characters. They had problems just like you and me. They were very human and imperfect just like you and me. Guess who was there to make everything right. Jesus – that’s who. He will make everything right for you and me -all we have to do is ask and believe. Jesus (God) is the hero of all. He is the God of second chances – our Maker – our Savior – our salvation. When we try to do it our way – it is impossible, but all things are possible for God. Highly recommend you read this very interesting book, Lucado is an excellent author. He puts you right in the picture – you are there in the tents, tending the flock, and yes, even with the shepherd
How do you feel when people, mostly strangers, give you unsolicited advice on how to raise or discipline your kid? The following happened to me a few months back: A few months back, this complete stranger pissed me off royally. It takes me a lot before I become fed up. I normally let people say whatever they want and I let it roll off my back. Anyway, are you familiar with those little vending machines that have little trinkets and toys in them? Well, my three and a half year old daughter and I had just left the ice cream parlor. My kid sees one of these machines right outside. She wants a trinket and I tell her that she cannot have it this time. I had gotten her a trinket out of the machine earlier. Now, this isn’t about being cheap, it’s about teaching her that she can’t have everything she wants when she wants it. If I start getting her things every time she asks then I will never see the end of it, not to mention I would be spoiling my child’s character. Of course, she decides that she won’t move from the machine. There are three women standing a couple of feet away from her, eating their ice cream. I notice one of the women watching us. I think nothing of it. At this point, I had walked a couple of yards away from my kid in hopes that she would follow (Yes, I was watching her) and of course, she did not budge. The woman that had been watching us approaches my daughter and starts talking to her. I find this strange especially since the woman is acting super friendly and even does a little hop. ??? Then I see my child pointing at something in the machine. This woman proceeds Character Vending Machine to take her coin purse out of her pocket. This is when I step in. I politely tell this woman that I appreciate the thought but that it was not necessary. Now, the woman’s demeanor changes. She gives me this disdainful look and snaps, “Why not?” I’m a bit taken aback but again I tell her thanks but it is not necessary. I think that explanation ought to suffice. I also think it is rude and a bit creepy for a stranger to offer or give something to a child without asking the parent for their consent. Especially after the parent has distanced themselves away from the kid. How else am I going to teach my kid to not accept things from strangers? She proceeds to tell me that my child is going to grow up into a very angry person because I don’t get her things and I don’t let her do things. I was starting to get pissed off now because here I told my kid that she could not have something and this woman is standing there insisting that she should get what she wants. I tell her that she does not know me, she does not know what I do or do not do with my child. I don’t know why I even bother to explain myself to this woman but I tell her that my kid did in fact get a toy earlier and that I am only teaching her that she cannot have everything she wants all the time. It’s not like she doesn’t have enough at home and we certainly do not need her charity. Then she tells me, “Well, did you explain this to her because she might not understand.” This woman is completely oblivious to the fact that I’m clearly not appreciating what she is doing. I tell her that I have indeed explained it my daughter many times and even if she doesn’t understand what I’m trying to do, she will eventually and this is what I’m preparing her for. I also tell her that in my culture, when people behave as she is behaving, it is considered rude and an insult. By making such offers and being insistent, a person may be implying that the other person cannot care for their children properly or is too poor to buy them things. She tells me this is nonsense. Then to make matters worse the woman kneels down and sweetly says to my kid, “You have to understand that sometimes grown ups are mean and don’t understand kids…”Now, I’ve had it and I tell her that she needs to mind her own business. I tell her that this is my child and not hers, and that I can raise and educate my child as I see fit without her input. She still tries to insist that my kid is going to be very angry one day so I tell her that this is my problem not hers and that that she can do whatever she wants with her own children. I tell her to mind her own business and she gives me this look as if I were unbelievably horrid. I just don’t understand why this woman was being this way. I’m still shocked that a person would approach a complete stranger and their child in such a manner. Eventually, she walked off back to her friends who stood there looking incredibly embarrassed. How would you have handled this? Do you think I was right to be pissed and to tell her to mind her own business? I certainly believe it was necessary. I didn’t raise my voice or make a scene and her behavior was uncalled for. This woman was actively undermining my parental authority in front of my child. She may have not meant any harm but she could have just walked away right in the beginning or not approac
